My Adventures with the Granny Square

20180404_203009

A little about how I came across crochet, I used to work for a crafting magazine and was taught to crochet by a colleague of mine who I know refer to as my Crochet Mother (yes I watch Drag Race – oh honey!) I learned how to make a granny square for my first project and from there (I hate using this expression BUT) I was quite literally hooked.

So below is my experience with the granny square.

Beloved by grandmothers the world over, the granny square is perfect for a beginner, even preferable. Utilising just two, count ’em, TWO stitches – the treble (or US double) crochet stitch and the chain stitch, it’s easy to learn and has so many uses.

I started with the simple granny square blanket using Fairy Isle variegated yarn from one of my local yarn stockists. It’s lovely and soft, and because I’m lazy and don’t want to be weaving in ends here there and everywhere, it satisfies my love for an explosion of colour too.

Granny squares can serve a multitude of purposes. You can make one huge granny square blanket, crochet individual ones together, or make tiny squares into hundreds of other unique and gorgeous things!

I made my very own Kindle cover by crocheting tiny granny squares and whip stitching them all together. I love how classic and yet so modern it looks at the same time.

It’s very informal, which is Mary Berry-ish for messy. It needs blocking, and was basically a test piece to see how big it would turn out, but I really love the colours and the overall look so I’ll be attempting this one again – watch this space!

Until next time, happy crocheting 😀
